Auschwitz, Oswiecim, Poland, where the former army barracks were taken over by the Germans in 1940, and initially populated with Polish political prisioners. The Nazi's expanded the camp imprisioning Jews from all over Europe, before sending them to their deaths at nearby Berkenau.
